Life

Stieding is the son of the sculptor Harald Stieding and first learned to be a stonemason. From 1991 to 1994 he studied at the University of Fine Arts in Dresden. In 1995 he switched to Hubert Kiecol at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . Jan Stieding finished his studies in 1998 as a master student of Jörg Immendorff and then worked as his assistant until 2000. From 2000 to 2001 he was a curator for young art in the Atelier Immendorff Kaistraße 16 in Düsseldorf. In 2001 he had his first exhibition at the Nosbaum Reding gallery in Luxembourg. The artist's book published by Navado Press in 2005 with a text by Raimund Stecker Realisierungen von Verborgene (Realizations of Hidden Objects), which appeared at the same time as the exhibition Risk in the Luxembourg gallery Nosbaum Reding, focuses on paintings whose motifs are derived from the artist's experiences and memories in the GDR. Work titles such as youth club , Palastbar , Subbotnik , Kati allude to this. In the mostly large-format pictures as well as in the gouache and watercolor series of the following years, narratives and memories from scientific, psychological, literary and biographical topics come together. The motifs, often taken from the contemporary media world, are only the occasion for process-like painting and are driven to abstraction by diffuse color gradients and irritating spots, accentuations and zones of blurring.
