Jantar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jantar ( Russian Янтарь , in German amber ) is the special economic zone established on the territory of Kaliningrad Oblast in Russia .

In 1991, when Lithuania gained independence, Kaliningrad lost its territorial connection with mainland Russia. Politicians therefore proposed the creation of a special economic zone. It was established by decree by Boris Yeltsin to give the exclave better economic development prospects. However, shortly after it was founded, also by Boris Yeltsin, almost all powers were withdrawn again because the then Moscow government feared separatism . Due to this policy, the development of the special economic zone has so far been rather unsuccessful. Only the watch industry has been able to develop to some extent so far.
