history

When the city of Valencia was in Roman times in 138 BC. BC, they chose the location because of the favorable location at the winding end of the Turia. The place of the foundation was at a higher point that was spared from flooding. At that time, however, the sea level was about four meters below today's level.

The river served not only to supply the city with water, but also as a natural moat in the defense of the city. The river was still navigable for small boats so that goods could be transported on it.

Up until the Middle Ages there was this possibility of navigating the river by boat. The progressive growth of the city meant that the Turia carried less and less water and soon ran only as a narrow body of water through the old river bed. Nevertheless, there were repeated floods that cost many lives. In response, measures were taken to prevent further such disasters by building dams.

In October 1957, heavy rain events, especially in the north of Valencia, caused the Turia to leave its river bed and large parts of the Valencian city center were flooded. This flood disaster killed at least 81 people and also caused considerable material damage. After the flood, the “Plan Sur” was decided, which provided for a diversion of the Turia south around the city and which has since flowed into the Mediterranean at the port of Valencia . Instead of the river, a city motorway should now be led through the old river bed. These plans were not pursued after the end of Francisco Franco's dictatorship.

Instead, measures were taken in the 1980s to transform the old Turia river bed into a large park, the Jardines del Turia. The aim was to create a varied environment with various types of green and leisure facilities that was accessible to the entire city population. The facility was divided into sections that differ from each other in terms of plant species and use.
