history

Jatinegara has been a district of Batavia , now Jakarta , since 1935 . Before that, it was an independent suburb called Meester Cornelis . Through the sovereignty treaty with the Republic of Indonesia of December 27, 1949, the name Batavia was changed to Jakarta. Other European names were also changed. Meester became Cornelis Jatinegara, which means land of teak wood. The long-established population continues to refer to the place as Mester, after the Portuguese name of Meester Cornelis van Senen , who formerly gave the area its name. Alternative spellings are Djati Negara and Batinegara . There were two explosions at the Kelurahan Kampung Melayu bus station on May 25, 2017. A total of three police officers died. At least 10 other people were injured.
