" Jauchzen " ( long call , trumpeter call or "the challenge") is a very typical, loud series of calls from the seagulls , which is often associated with a series of movements and previous vocalizations.

The “shouting” of the herring gull (audio sample) can be described as aau aau au kjiiiau kjau kjau… . The middle part of the American herring gull (audio sample) is characterized by particularly high-pitched, shrill sounds, but this can also be the case with European herring gulls. With the black-headed gull (audio sample) it sounds much lower, with the common gull (audio sample) it sounds very high. With other large gulls of the genus Larus , but also with other genera, it sounds partly similar, partly very species-specific, but follows the same pattern in each case.

The "shouting" is expressed especially in the summer months and within a social association and expresses dominance. It is brought forward both from flight and by seated birds. In the latter case, it is not infrequently introduced by one to three barking sounds ( aau aau au ... ), expressing the departure intention. To do this, the head is lowered slightly. Then the head is lowered more and the introductory kijj ... is uttered . Then the head is raised in a flowing transition and the second part of the polysyllabic series of calls follows with the beak wide open … kjau kjau kjau… . The seated bird often assumes a slight incline.
