Under Jazz Blues are understood generally a composition that on the Blue form builds, but is developed in harmony and with funds from the Jazz interpreted and used thus for improvisation. Because of its short, repetitive form, the jazz blues is considered a test of the creativity and authority of the improvising soloist.

In jazz blues, the melodies are usually not sung, but only interpreted instrumentally, which is already taken into account in the composition. Pieces of the jazz repertoire that build on the blues scheme with regard to the beat and harmony sequence are called jazz blues, for example " C Jam Blues ", "Blue Monk", " Straight No Chaser ", " All Blues ", "Au Privave", " Billie's Bounce ”or“ Blues for Alice ”. Blues means a special chorus structure of 12 bars that is repeated and its harmonies are derived from traditional blues. The harmonic structures are compared to a classic blues z. T. changed and varied. However, the basic structure (for example, always subdominant in measure five ) is mostly retained, as is the twelve- measure form.

Some jazz blues compositions, however, are more complex. In the jazz blues, compared to the standard blues, chord sequences can be changed and individual chords can be substituted. For example, in the place of a dominant seventh chord, an altered chord is played on the same root or a dominant 7th chord whose root is shifted by a reduced fifth compared to the actual root.
