At the age of fifteen, Jeanne was a clever protégé of the Baroness de Bouhey and a skilled gardener in a castle in the Dombes . She is full of longing for the sea and her secretly loved Philibert Aubriot, a doctor and botanist who taught her the science of plants and herbs. But when the black curly corsair and Knight of Malta Vincent arrives at a hunting party, ready to open up his heart, his ship and distant islands to her ...

At seventeen, Jeanne was on her way to Paris as the “secretary” of the ambitious Doctor Philibert Aubriot “in pants”, who was appointed botanist at the Royal Gardens.

There, nineteen-year-old Jeanne puts her profound knowledge of the healing power and beautifying effect of plants in the service of noble society, explores the Paris Templar quarter and even discusses with Denis Diderot . In doing so, she knows how to carefully use the Duc de Richelieu's desire until the world-class Chevalier Vincent comes back into her life and makes demands. Jeanne and Vincent spend a night together, whereupon Vincent asks Jeanne to choose between him and Philibert, who has since become ill. Jeanne stays with her sick boyfriend and Vincent leaves disappointed.
