Rabbi Jechiel Michel Halevi Epstein ( Yechiel Michel Epstein; born January 24, 1829 in Bobruisk , Russian Empire , now Belarus ; died February 24, 1908 ) was a halachic authority and Posek in Lithuania , often named Aruch ha Shulchan after his main work.

Life

He was a Levi (also as part of the name: ha-Levi), his family was wealthy and was one of the arms suppliers of the tsarist army. Epstein studied the Torah at home, married, received the Smicha, and in 1863 became rabbi of Novozypkov (east of Minsk ), where there were a large number of Hasidic Jews, most of them followers of Chabad Lubavitch. Epstein teamed up with their spiritual leader, Menachem Mendel Schneersohn , and thus increased his acceptance in Hasidic circles; nine years later Epstein became Rabbi of Novogrudok (south of Minsk), where he worked for over 30 years until his death.
