The Jednota českých matematiků a fyziků ( JČMF ), German Union of Czech Mathematicians and Physicists , is a Czech learned society.

history

The union was founded in 1862 as "Spolek pro volné přednášky z mathematiky a fysiky" (Association for free lectures in mathematics and physics), and from 1901 offices are established in other cities in the country. From 1912 it bears its current name with interruptions.

In 1950 the Union had to give up its property including the publishing house and the library. They were transferred to the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences , the Union became an affiliate of the academy's learned society.

structure

At the end of the 1960s, four specialist sections (two scientific and two pedagogical) were spun off and now operate as societies:

Some of the companies that are still members of the Union have offices or representations in Slovakia and work closely with Slovak scientists.

The Union is a member of the European Physical Society through ČFS and a member of the European Mathematical Society through ČMS .

Publications and public relations

The Union publishes the journal Pokroky matematiky, fyziky a astronomie (advances in mathematics, physics and astronomy) with articles on physics, mathematics and astronomy as well as on educational issues in these areas. In addition, she participates in the publication of the periodicals:

  • Matematika-fyzika-informatika (Mathematics-Physics-Computer Science) on the theory and practice of teaching these subjects
  • Učitel matematiky (mathematics teacher) on the methodological and didactic problems of mathematics
  • Školská fyzika (School Physics) for physics lessons
  • Československý časopis pro fyziku (Czechoslovakian Journal of Physics) is the journal of the ČFS
  • Informace MVS (Information from MVS) is a bulletin of Česká matematická společnost (MVS)

The Union also cooperates with the academic publisher Prometheus and publishes numerous specialist publications. Public relations events include the Mathematical and Physical Olympiad and other competitions that are primarily aimed at schoolchildren and students.

The Union is a publisher of textbooks in mathematics and physics in Czechoslovakia and now in the Czech Republic.
