Yefim Moissejewitsch Fomin ( Russian Ефим Моисеевич Фомин ; born January 15, 1909 in Kolyshki, near Vitebsk ; † June 26, 1941 in Brest (Belarus) ) was the regimental commissar and the deputy commander of the 84th Rifle Regiment of the 6th Rifle Division. At the end of June 1941 he was one of the defenders of the Brest fortress .

Life

Fomin came from a poor Jewish family. His parents died early and he was raised by his relatives. In 1924 he joined the Komsomol and in 1930 the CPSU (B) . The party sent him into the army , where he worked as a political officer.

In August 1938 he became division commissioner of the 23rd Rifle Division. In 1940 he was in Daugavpils with the division. As a result of an accusation, he was demoted in March 1941 and sent to Brest as regimental commissar of the 84th Rifle Regiment of the 6th Rifle Division .

On the morning of June 22, 1941, he was in the Brest fortress. After the German attack he took over the command of the defenders who had gathered in the ring barracks at the Cholmer gate of the Brest fortress. After days of hard fighting, the German troops captured the citadel. Jefim Fomin was captured on June 26, 1941, identified as a commissioner and a Jew and shot on the basis of the commissioner's order .

Posthumous honor

  • January 3, 1957: Yefim M. Fomin was posthumously awarded the Order of Lenin for his role in the battle for the Brest Fortress (1941) .
  • May 8, 1991: According to the application of veterans of the 23rd Rifle Division, the proceedings against Fomin from early 1941 were reviewed, the demotion revoked and the rank of division commissioner reassigned.
