In the parliamentary elections in 1992 Jammeh stood as a candidate for the National Convention Party (NCP) in the constituency of Lower Niumi for election. He won the constituency ahead of Dodou N'Gum (PPP), Musa M. Sonko (GPP) and A. Baboucarr Gaye (PDOIS). He became the constituency representative in parliament. In the following parliamentary elections in 1997 , Jammeh did not run.
