List of breeds of chicken

Jersey Giant is a domestic chicken breed that was bred by John and Thomas Black in the United States at the end of the 19th century . The intent of breeding was a breed of chicken to replace the turkey as the main source of poultry meat. The chicken breed was named after New Jersey , the country of origin .

breeding

Jersey Giants are the largest breed of chicken. The breeding standard of the Black Jersey Giants was published in the United States in 1922 in the American Standard of Perfection . The original breeds include Java chicken , Croad-Langshan and Brahma . The breeding standard for white Jersey Giants was set in 1947, on average black chickens are about 0.5 kg heavier than white Jersey Giants.

The chicken breed was at times used as a capon and a beef chicken on a larger scale, but modern hybrid breeds grow significantly faster than Jersey Giants and are therefore used by the meat-producing industry today. In 1985 the breeding standard of the Jersey Giants in Germany was set by the BDRG . They are widespread mainly in the USA, with a little luck you can find this breed at exhibitions in Europe or other parts of the world.

features

As the name Jersey Giant suggests, this breed is one of the larger and heavier chickens. The back is wide and long, you can see a horizontal posture. The chickens have a slightly curved neck, which is fully feathered. The trunk is long and also wide. The shoulders are also wider. The rooster is very fully feathered. Both face and comb are red. The comb is simple, big and straight. The lobes are also red. The eyes are dark brown, to the layman they appear black. The thighs are conspicuous because they are more densely feathered in relation to the lush body, which causes a broad stance. The legs (legs) are often dark gray and strong. The white soles are typical of the breed. Hens lay brown eggs.
