"Jesus of Nazareth" is the title of the three-volume theological work by Pope Benedict XVI. at the center of which is the figure and message of Jesus Christ , the inner center of the Christian faith. From the author's point of view, the historically complex traditions of the four canonical Gospels are read, analyzed and commented on as an internally coherent message.

In the trilogy, Pope Benedict XVI. a new interpretation of the Bible that combines two very different methods of hermeneutics - the christological-canonical and the historical-critical . One focus of the work is the examination of biblical interpreters and exegetical directions from two centuries as well as paternal exegesis, the most important conclusion of which is that the Bible's image of Jesus and the "historical Jesus" are identical. By means of singular historical methods, only fragmentary and distorted Jesus figures would be abstracted from the biblical image, instead of "reconstructed". With his exegesis, Pope Benedict XVI. an actual exegetical theology and contributes to the postscriptual development of writing . His book of Jesus, which was written without any doctrinal or dogmatic intention, aims to bring Jesus, as God and human, closer to the present generation, rationally and emotionally.

The German original edition of the three individual volumes, the manuscript of which was handwritten, was published by Herder Verlag between 2007 and 2012 . The other editions, translated into numerous languages, are published by Libreria Editrice Vaticana and RCS Libri SpA , Milano.
