JewelEye

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The brand name JewelEye denotes shiny platinum jewelry elements that are a few millimeters in size and are inserted into the top layer of the conjunctiva of the eye. The implant is inserted into the eye by a surgical procedure under local anesthesia within about 15 minutes under microscopic control. Among other things, crescent, heart and star-shaped elements are offered, which are placed next to the iris in the white part of the eye. The cost of the procedure developed by the Netherlands Institute for Innovative Ocular Surgery (Rotterdam / Netherlands) in 2002 is between 500 and 1,200 euros per piece of jewelry. As is often wrongly stated, this is not a special form of piercing .

Some ophthalmologists strongly advise against such interventions, as complications in the form of eye irritation, bleeding and even scarring can occur. Serious eye damage is also feared, for example if the implant penetrates deeper regions of the eye.
