Jewish Holocaust Museum and Research Center

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Jewish Holocaust Museum and Research Center is located in Elsternwick , a suburb of Melbourne in the state of Victoria of Australia .

The museum was founded in 1984 by survivors of the Holocaust . Its mission is to commemorate the six million Jews who were murdered by the National Socialists between 1933 and 1945 .

The center was founded without significant financial support from the Australian authorities or other sources and has therefore always relied on the commitment of Holocaust survivors, their families and other volunteers. Thanks to their active support, the JHC has developed into one of the most important Australian research centers in this field since its inception.

The aim of the museum is to combat racism and promote tolerance in society . A special focus is on imparting knowledge about the Holocaust, especially for the younger generation. Around 16,000 schoolchildren visit the museum every year.

In addition to guided tours for school groups, some of which are conducted by Holocaust survivors, the museum offers an adult education program, teacher training courses and lectures open to the public. In cooperation with the charity Jewish Care , the museum also plays an important role in the care and support of Holocaust survivors.

Since 2008, the JHC has been a memorial service mission of the Austrian Foreign Service . The activities of the memorial servants include translation work, preparation of exhibitions, assistance in research projects, library work, cataloging and maintenance of databases.
