Ji-Paraná
Ji-Paraná , officially Município de Ji-Paraná , is the second largest city in terms of population in the Brazilian state of Rondônia . In 2007 it had 107,679 inhabitants on an area of 6,897 km².
geography
The river of the same name flows through Ji-Paraná and divides the city into two large districts. There are also several smaller islands on the river between the districts. The area around Ji-Paraná is strongly characterized by agricultural fields, the tropical rain forest has been pushed back very far.
history
The first settlers came to the region around 1877. The economy was largely based on the production of rubber by rubber trees . Rubber production kept increasing and increasing and the population of the region increased immensely. Today's city was created in 1912 through the construction of a telegraph station, which served to better organize rubber mining. In 1920 Ji-Paraná had only 20 inhabitants. From the 1920s to 1950s, there was economic stagnation due to falling rubber prices that lasted until the discovery of diamonds in the region. Further large increases in population were recorded in 1965, as the city got a road connection.
population
The population has grown rapidly over the past 100 years. There are several reasons for this: The region around Ji-Paraná was one of the main rubber production locations in Brazil. This production was continuously expanded so that more workers were needed. Diamonds were discovered in the region in the 1950s. Even more workers were needed to dismantle it. In addition, diamonds are also a factor of wealth that makes the population richer, which in turn attracts more people. As of 1965, the population continued to grow much faster than before, as the city got a connection to a developed country road.
