OceanAir Linhas Aéreas SA was a Brazilian airline based in São Paulo and based at São Paulo-Guarulhos Airport . As part of the Synergy Group , it received the trademark usage rights to trade as Avianca Brasil and was a member of the Star Alliance aviation alliance . On May 24, 2019, the Brazilian aviation authority ANAC ordered the forced grounding .

history

Avianca Brasil was founded in 1998 under the name OceanAir Linhas Aéreas Lda. founded as a taxi airline for the oil companies operating in the Campos basin . In 2002, she also started scheduled flights between São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro , Macaé and Campos . To increase awareness, the airline shortly afterwards opened a flight connection between São Paulo-Congonhas and Rio-Santos Dumont with a stopover at São Paulo-Guarulhos Airport to make it easier for passengers to connect to the major hubs. The price of airfare between São Paulo airports was cheaper than a taxi and was the same as a luxury bus ride. This service has now been discontinued.

Since the Synergy Group took over the Colombian Avianca SA in 2004 , OceanAir u. a. as a feeder for this in Brazil. In early 2010 it was finally renamed Avianca Brasil. Avianca Brasil was the fourth largest airline in terms of passenger volume and a 5.1% market share in Brazil.

On July 22, 2015 Avianca Brasil came, as it did her eponymous sister company Avianca earlier, the airline alliance Star Alliance at.

In November 2017, the Synergy Group started flight operations for its subsidiary Avianca Argentina with three destinations, Rosario , Mar del Plata and Buenos Aires .

On 11 December 2018 requested Avianca Brasil bankruptcy protection - similar to the US Chapter 11 - after contract terms and outstanding payments had been no consensual result in negotiations with the lessor Aircastle terms. The company stated that it wanted to continue operations as usual.

In April 2019, Avianca Brasil was forced to return 18 aircraft to leasing companies for unpaid leasing fees . This resulted in the cancellation of more than 1,045 domestic flights. In December 2018, the airline was still operating a fleet of more than 50 aircraft. On May 24, 2019, the Brazilian aviation authority ANAC announced the provisional flight ban for the airline.

On June 17, 2019, due to the operational and financial situation of Oceanair Linhas Aéreas SA , Avianca Holdings announced the immediate termination of the trademark usage agreement that had enabled it to use the Avianca Brasil brand commercially since December 2009. On September 1, 2019, the airline Oceanair Linhas Aéreas SA (Avianca Brasil) left the Star Alliance .

Incidents

Until recently, Avianca Brasil recorded only one incident without fatal consequences:

• On March 28, 2014, a Fokker 100 ( registration PR-OAF ) had an accident while landing at Brasília Airport after the nose landing gear could not be extended. Nobody was harmed in the incident, but the plane was written off.
