Campos basin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Campos Basin is a marine area in the South Atlantic of 100,000 square kilometers extension before the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro with major oil - deposits , partly by the company Petrobras are mined in considerable depth.

More than 40 individual oil fields are known between the 21st and 23rd southern latitudes , the largest of which is located over 200 kilometers off the coast and is called Marlin . The mining depth under water has already reached more than 2000 meters, while the deposits in places extend to several kilometers below the seabed. The production quantities, which cover four fifths of Brazil's own requirements, reached their highest level in the years 1985 to 1997. In 2010 a total production of 1.8 million barrels (282,000 m³) of oil and 34.6 million m³ of natural gas is expected daily. Confirmed reserves are estimated at 7.21 billion barrels (1.1 billion cubic meters) of oil and condensate and 101.53 cubic kilometers of gas.

On November 7, 2011, several thousand barrels of oil leaked from Chevron's wells and polluted the Campos Basin. According to the oil company, the reason was incorrect pressure calculations for test drilling. After ten days the leak could be closed. Brazil then demanded 8.3 billion euros in damages from Chevron.
