Jim Marurai

Jim Marurai (born July 9, 1947 in Ivirua on Mangaia ) is a politician of the Cook Islands and was the tenth Prime Minister of the island state from 2004 to 2010 .

Marurai is from Mangaia Island , attended Tereora College in Nikao on Rarotonga and the University of Otago in Dunedin , New Zealand . Later he was a teacher at Oneroa School in Mangaia.

In 1994 he was elected to parliament for the Democratic Party for the first time and since June 1999 has been Minister of Education. In November 2004 he and other DP MPs founded the Demo Tumu party ("true democrats", later called the Cook Islands First Party ), which dissolved in 2006. On December 14, 2004, he was elected Prime Minister by parliament with a 14-9 vote and remained in office until the Democrats were defeated in the 2010 election. He is still a Member of Parliament for the Ivirua constituency.
