Jimmy Liao (Chinese 廖福彬; Pinyin : Liào Fúbīn , born November 15, 1958 in Taiwan ) is a Taiwanese illustrator and picture book author. The English-speaking first name Jimmy corresponds phonetically to his Chinese stage name 幾米 ( Jǐmǐ ).

Life

Liao graduated from the Fine Arts Faculty of the Private Chinese Cultural University in Taipei, Taiwan. In 1995 he fell ill with leukemia and had to undergo intensive three years of treatment, but was ultimately cured of the disease. This decisive event marked a turning point in his life and led him to embark on a new career path. After 12 years in the advertising industry, he gave up his profession as a designer in 1998 and started a new career as an illustrator and writer. His illustrated stories, which often portray animals and children, describe the ambivalent feelings of losing childhood and the transition to adulthood, as well as the loneliness and fears that big city life brings with it. Looking back, Liao said that the loneliness and fear he experienced during and after his illness would also flow into his current works. His works have been translated into several languages, including English, French, German, Greek, Japanese, Korean and Thai, and reached an audience of millions worldwide. Some have also been adapted for movies.

In 2003, Jimmy Liao was named one of the "55 Creative Minds in Asia" by Studio Voice magazine . In 2007 the Discovery Channel dedicated a portrait to him as one of six outstanding personalities in Taiwan. Jimmy Liao has been nominated four times for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award.
