A jitte , also Jittei , Jutte ( Japanese 十 手 , dt. "Ten hands") is a striking weapon that was used by police officers during the Edo period .

description

The jitte is usually an iron or brass rod about 45 cm long. Shortly before the handle , an upwardly directed fork prong (as in the older Hachiwari ) is forged from the blade, with which a sword blade can be stopped and, in the best case, broken. The rod can be round, flat or square. There are different versions that differ in shape, length, size and features. Some versions have a scabbard and a booklet that resembles a tanto . They are indistinguishable when worn in the sheath. Other versions are similar to a tessen , but have fold-out blades and striking pieces. There is often a tassel cord ( 総 紐 , fusahimo ) on the handle , the color of which indicates the area of responsibility.

The jitte is also used in Bujinkan Budo and Jōdō .
