João de Castilho

João de Castilho (* 1470 in Arnuero , Cantabria , † before January 1553 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese architect of Spanish origin.

life and work

Castilho came to Portugal via Galicia and Italy . From 1515 he built the monastery church of Tomar and in 1519 became the construction manager of the entire monastery complex. In 1517 he was Boytac's successor as construction manager of the Jeronimos Monastery in Belém , and in 1522 he built the nave vault of the church. In 1528 he also took over the construction work in Batalha . Several of the palaces he built on the banks of Lisbon were destroyed in an earthquake in 1755. Castilho is considered to be one of the most important Manueline architects . In 1561 he was ennobled posthumously.
