Joachim Gaunse

Joachim Gaunse (also Gans) was a European mining engineer and explorer . He lived in the 16th century and is considered to be the first documented Jew on the territory of what is now the United States of America .

Life

Gaunse was born in Prague and mentioned for the first time in 1581. In 1584 he was recruited by Walter Raleigh for an expedition to North America. A permanent settlement was to be created there. He later left North America and went to Bristol .
