Jobst was a materials trading company in Stuttgart which, under its founder Friedrich Jobst, developed into one of the most important chemical manufacturers for quinine of the 19th century.

Jobst company, materials trade and alkaloid production

The first pharmaceutical companies for the production of alkaloids (such as quinine) usually emerged from pharmacies. In addition, some material stores such as the Jobst company managed to develop into pharmaceutical manufacturers. Since their founders were predominantly drug-savvy merchants and neither pharmacists nor chemists, they received little attention in the history of pharmacy and natural science.

The Jobst company was founded in 1808 in Stuttgart by Friedrich Jobst. He was a merchant with medicinal expertise, as his publication on the medicinal plant Ratanhia shows. A price list from 1830, which was also analyzed, offers an insight into the range in this phase of the company. In addition to family representatives, Oswald Hesse (1835–1917) and the Jewish researcher Julius Morgenroth (1871–1924) were named in the company's research and development area .

After the founder's death, the company moved to Feuerbach in 1864 . The material goods trade in Germany was given up and the focus was on the increasingly difficult business with quinine production ( "Jobst quinine factory" ).

Successor company United Quinine Factory Zimmer & Co.

The competitor Zimmer bought the Jobst company in 1887 and both merged to form the United Quinine Factory Zimmer & Co.

In 1888 the quinine manufacturer Carl Koch closed his company in Oppenheim and sold it to the United Quinine Factory Zimmer.

In 1893 the partners converted the limited partnership into a GmbH.

The CF Boehringer & Söhne GmbH acquired in 1926, the current drawn by the fall in prices of quinine and the aftermath of World War affected companies. A year later, the plant in Feuerbach and thus the former Jobst location in Württemberg were closed.
