The Herder Medal was first awarded to 20 Russian teachers on May 7, 1957, on the eve of Liberation Day . From 1958, the medal was awarded to high school graduates and later also to students and apprentices with excellent performance in Russian in three stages: gold, silver and bronze, each with an enamelled honor bar. The medal was awarded at festive events, often co-organized by the Society for German-Soviet Friendship .
