Johann Kern Observatory

The Johann Kern observatory , located above the Eichgrundsiedlung in the Reicholzheim district of Wertheim, can be seen from afar thanks to its aluminum dome. Since the inauguration of the observatory on May 9, 1981, it has housed a Newtonian telescope with a mirror diameter of 24 inches under this six-meter dome . This precision instrument was commissioned by the stone marker “farmer astronomer” Johann Kern (1895–1975) in the early 1960s . After his death it was taken over by the Johann-Kern-Sternwarte Wertheim am Main e. V. to preserve it and give it a new location.

In 2004 the observatory was supplemented by a second building with a retractable roof. The Ernst-Sachs-Bau, named after the long-time sponsor and honorary member of the association, serves as a protection and observation platform for a telescope with an opening width of 15 cm , which is mainly used for solar and planetary observation.

public relation

The telescopes are not only used by club members for their own observations, but are also available to kindergartens, schools and youth groups from the area. Interested visitors also have the opportunity to take a look through one of the telescopes during the frequent public observations.
