from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Christoph Rothe (* approx. 1653 in Roßwein ; † June 21, 1700 or 1720) was a German composer, violinist and singer.

biography

There is hardly any information about Rothes life. Only the court organist Ernst Ludwig Gerber, who worked in Sondershausen, wrote in an article in the Tonkünstlerlexikons (1792) that Rothe had trained himself as a singer and violinist under the guidance of his father, who was a cantor of Roßwein, and was soon to serve as a falsetist and violinist at Coburg in the Herzogl. Court orchestra was active. He is also said to have written and performed several considerable sacred works there, as passions, Easter pieces, etc. for the Princely Chapel .

Works

Rothe's only known work to date is a St. Matthew Passion from Sondershausen , the Passio Domini Jesu Christi Secundum St. Matthew of 1697.
