John I (Kiev)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John I ( Russian Иоанн I ), monk name Jona (Russian Иона ) was Archbishop or Metropolitan of Kiev (before 1008 – before 1035).

John was probably of Greek origin. John was first mentioned in 1008 when he consecrated the stone Church of Peter and Paul in Kiev and the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross in Pereyaslavl .

Johannes served for 27 years. Even before his death, he is said to have taken the monk's vows and assumed the monk's name Jonah. He probably died before 1039.

Remarks

  1. A Russian or Bulgarian origin was considered possible due to his announcement of the veneration of saints Boris and Gleb in 1021, rather unlikely (at this time all bishops of the Rus were Greek, there is no evidence of Slavic origin)
  2. His successor Theopemt was first mentioned in 1039.
