Johanneskirche

The listed Johanneskirche is a church in Themar ( Thuringia ).

In addition to the town church, the Evangelical Lutheran has parish Themar a second church, the Church of St. John the cemetery . It emerged from the "upper church" at the exit of the city to Hildburghausen . The "upper church" was mentioned in 1492 in a document according to which Fritz von Bibra donated a mass to this church . In 1588 the church was converted into a Gottesackerkirche and consecrated in 1598. It got its name not after a saint, but after Johannes Hornschuch , who was the first to be buried in the cemetery , which is why it was also called "Hornschuch Chapel".

Remains of the Gothic windows and the masonry of the "upper church" can still be seen quite clearly in the masonry of St. John's Church. It is a simple stone block construction with a tile-covered gable roof .

The church was painstakingly renovated in 1980/81 by active parishioners and provided with benches and night storage heating. The most valuable items in the inventory include the altar plate from the 16th century, the pulpit with panel paintings from the end of the 16th century and a Gothic "linden wood crucifix". The gallery with simple painting runs around the north, west and south sides. Behind the altar stands the pulpit with its small stone staircase in an interesting place. Today the Johanneskirche is not only used for funeral ceremonies , but also for church services and smaller concerts and is of great importance for the church life of the city.
