The Johannisgasse (Polish Ulica Świętojańska ) is a street in Gdansk . It is located in the northern part of the Rechtstadt and runs in an east-west direction from the Johannistor along the Johanneskirche to the Marienkirche .

history

Danzig around 1600, Johannisgasse south of the Marien- und Johanneskirche

As early as the 10th century there was a cemetery in the western part of the later street, in 1188 the Nikolaikirche was first mentioned there. Around 1227 a Dominican monastery was founded here.

The Johannisgasse ( platea sancti johannis ), named after the St. John's Chapel, which was built around this time, was first mentioned in 1349 and 1353 . The name initially only referred to the eastern part of the street. At that time there was no city wall, the oldest mention of the Johannistor is only from 1454.

Mainly craftsmen and workers lived in Johannisgasse, merchants and somewhat wealthy citizens in a few houses.

In 1945 part of the building was destroyed. The road is now partially built on.

Some historical buildings have been preserved (or rebuilt?). The Nikolaikirche remained largely undamaged in 1945. The house numbers have remained the same since around 1850.
