John Duncan Arthur (born August 29, 1929 in Springs , † May 19, 2005 ) was a South African heavyweight boxer .

amateur

Duncan won in 1948 at the Olympic Games in London the bronze medal in the heavyweight division.

professional

He turned pro in 1949 and won his first sixteen fights, fourteen of which by knockout .

His first title fight was on October 13, 1952, the fight for the Commonwealth title in heavyweight. His opponent, the British John Williams , however, won by technical knockout in the seventh round. The second attempt to win this title also failed: on January 30, 1954, he was defeated by the British Don Cockell on points.

In 1953 he was South African heavyweight champion. He was able to defend this title five times. For the second defense of the title, he needed just 63 seconds against Jack Kukard on June 15, 1953. The most famous opponent of his professional career was George Chuvalo , whom he served in his fifth professional match in 1956 as a build-up opponent.

He completed his last fight on May 11, 1957 against his compatriot Bud Walker . Arthur won the fight in the third round by technical knockout. Then he stepped down from the boxing stage as the undefeated South Africa champion.
