John Farmer (composer, around 1570)
John Farmer (* around 1570 probably in London ; † after 1601) was an English composer and one of the lesser-known representatives of the English madrigal school.
Little is known about farmers' living conditions. He was probably first an organist in London. In 1595 he was appointed organist at Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin . He returned to London around 1600, but it is not known in what position he worked there.
Farmer has published a book with four-part madrigals . He was also a major contributor to Michael East's book of psalms . Instrumental works by Farmer have survived in various collections. His best known work is probably Fair Phyllis I Saw .
