Michael East (composer)

Michael East (* around 1580 in London , † 1648 in Lichfield ) was an English organist and composer .

East was the nephew of the London music publisher Thomas East (around 1540 to 1608). He received his Bachelor of Music degree from Cambridge in 1606 and worked from 1618 for the rest of his life in Lichfield Cathedral as choirmaster and organist.

Thomas Morley published one of his madrigals in 1603 in his collection The Triumphs of Orania .

East composed 7 groups of part books:

  • 1st and 2nd group: three- to five-part madrigals
  • 3rd and 4th groups: four- to six-part anthems , madrigals, pastorals , napolitans and fancies
