John Laird (politician)
John Laird (born March 29, 1950 in Santa Rosa , California ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party .
Life
Laird graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz . From 1983 to 1984 and again from 1987 to 1988 he was mayor of Santa Cruz. From December 2, 2002 to November 30, 2008, Laird was a member of the California State Assembly, replacing Fred Keeley . In 2009 he lost to Sam Blakeslee in the Senate election . Laird has been Secretary of the California Natural Resources Agency since January 5, 2011 . Laird is an openly gay resident in Santa Cruz .
