John Alston Maxton, Baron Maxton (born May 5, 1936 ) is a British Labor Party politician who was a member of the House of Commons for more than 22 years and has been a life peer member of the House of Lords since 2004 .

Life

Maxton, who became a member of the Labor Party in 1970, was elected member of the House of Commons for the first time in the general election on May 3, 1979 , where he represented the Glasgow Cathcart constituency for more than 22 years until the June 7, 2001 elections .

During his long term in parliament he was a member of the House Committee for Scotland from 1981 to 1983 and then of the House Committee on Public Accounts from 1983 to 1984, before he was spokesman for the opposition Labor Group on Health, Local Government and Housing in Scotland from 1985 to 1987 . After serving as opposition spokesman for Scotland between 1987 and 1992, Maxton was a member of the House of Commons Committee on National Heritage from 1992 to 1997. Most recently, he was a member of the Speaker Committee of the Lower House between 1994 and 2001 and from 1997 to 2001 a member of the House Committee for Culture, Media and Sport.

By a letters patent dated June 17, 2004, Maxton was raised to the nobility as a life peer with the title Baron Maxton , of Blackwaterfoot in Ayrshire and Arran . Shortly thereafter took place on 7 July 2004 its introduction ( Introduction ) as a member of the House of Lords . In the House of Lords he belongs to the Labor Party faction.

Maxton's uncle was the politician James Maxton , who represented the constituency of Glasgow Bridgeton as a member of the House of Commons from 1922 to 1946 and chaired the Independent Labor Party (ILP) between 1926 and 1931 and again from 1934 to 1939 .
