history

The merchant John Neilson from Paisley ordered in his will the establishment of the school and its equipping with the necessary financial means. The facility should serve to educate orphans and children from poor backgrounds. The prerequisite was that they had been living in Paisley for three years. The building was built between 1849 and 1852 to a design by the architect Charles Wilson . At the 1900 World's Fair in Paris , the John Neilson Institution won a gold medal for their exhibition. In 1967 the name was changed to John Neilson High School . In the following year, the premises proved to be too small for the increased number of students and she moved to new buildings in Millarston . The last time the building was used as a school in 1977 was vacant and damaged by vandalism. As part of extensive restoration work at the beginning of the 1990s, the former school was converted into a residential building.
