John Runnings

John Runnings (* 1918 in Manitoba ; † 25. April 2004 in Canada ) was known as "Wallcreeper" ( engl. Wall walker or) Wall Jumper .

Runnings came in 1962 with his wife because of the involvement of the United States in the Vietnam War the faith community of Quakers in Seattle at, as they actively the peace movement mittrugen (See the article Quäkerzeugnis and Peace Church ). After the US troops withdrew, he protested against the arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union.

In 1986 he climbed the Berlin Wall from West Berlin with a self-made ladder in front of running cameras and worked the top of the wall with a sledgehammer. He was of the border guards of the GDR pulled down, condemned by the justice of the GDR to 18 months in prison, released after three months and flown from Berlin. A wall ram he made can be seen in the Checkpoint Charlie Museum .

After the fall of the wall, he was also called "father of the wall-woodpeckers ".
