John Whitelocke
John Whitelocke (* 1757 - 23 October 1833 ) was a British officer .
Life
Whitelocke joined the army in 1778 and served in Jamaica , among others . In 1805 he was appointed lieutenant general.
In 1807, Buenos Aires was to be conquered under his command . To this end, he arrived on May 10, 1807 in Montevideo, which had been occupied by Samuel Auchmuty's troops three months earlier , with a troop strength of 6000 men, and took over the local military command. However, Whitelocke had to surrender after landing in Ensenada in the south of Buenos Aires on July 5, 1807 when attempting to conquer there on June 28, 1807 , after suffering losses of 1,100 dead and 1,500 prisoners in his army. On September 9, 1807, he and his troops left Montevideo.
Whitelocke died in Beaconsfield on October 23, 1833 .
