Jorays

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jorays (also Gurays ; † 1290 ) was in the late 13th century Eparch of Nobatia , the northernmost province of Makuria , in today's Sudan . In 1286 an Egyptian army attacked Makuria and marched into the empire along the Nile . The then King Semamun then ordered Nobatia to be evacuated. Jorays was Eparch in this province at the time and was captured by the Egyptians. Semamun fled south. The Egyptians put an unnamed son of a sister of Semamun on the throne of Makuria and confirmed Jorays in his office as Eparch of Nobatia. When the Egyptians withdrew from Makuria, Semamun returned from exile and regained power. Jorays fled to the court of the sultan in Egypt, who in turn set up a new force, moved to Makuria, appointed a new puppet ruler and again confirmed Jorays in office. After their departure, Semanun returned in 1290 and cruelly killed this puppet ruler and Jorays, who were not named by name.
