Jornal do Exército is a military journal of the Portuguese Armed Forces that has been published continuously since 1960. The publisher is the “Ministério do Exército” based in the Palácio Vilalva in Lisbon .
history
At the beginning of 1959, Major General David dos Santos, Major Pinto Coelho and Captain José Marques submitted a proposal for the creation of a military journal at the Military Academy. Afonso Magalhães de Almeida Fernandes , then Minister of Defense, accepted the request. The first edition appeared on January 11, 1960 with 20,000 copies. In January 2010, on the 50th anniversary of the Jornal do Exército , not only was a special edition published, but the editors moved into the building of their current headquarters in São Sebastião da Pedreira , in the 3rd Bairro in the capital Lisbon.
The 627th edition of Jornal do Exército was published in April 2013 .
Every year, 11 multi-colored illustrated editions are published using the offset printing process . In addition, special editions of the army appear if the activities or important events justify this. Jornal do Exército provides the reader and members of the armed forces with internal information about organs and institutions and deals with essential questions and topics in general and the armed forces in particular. Jornal do Exército works with authorized domestic and foreign military and civil agencies who report as part of their activities.
The Jornal do Exército is also available in public newsagents.
Awards
In 2007 the journal was awarded the gold medal “Medalha de Ouro de Serviços Distintos” by the President of Portugal Aníbal Cavaco Silva .
