José Isbert

José Isbert (also known as Pepe Isbert ; born March 3, 1886 in Madrid as José Ysbert Alvarruiz ; † November 28, 1966 there ) was one of the most famous Spanish actors .

Life

After training to become a business economist, Isbert decided to pursue an acting career. At the age of 19 he made his debut at the Teatro Apollo in Madrid. Then Isbert was a member of the Teatro Lara for sixteen years, with which he toured throughout Spain and Latin America. In 1935 he founded his own theater group.

In 1912 he made his film debut, but only appeared in a few silent films. In the 1930s he made several sound films. Isbert's actual film career only began in the 1940s, and from 1941 to 1967 he starred in over 100 films. The 1.66 m tall actor mostly played the typical Spanish citizen, embodying this character role in both melodramas and comedies. His best-known roles include the Mayor in Berlanga's Welcome, Mr. Marshall , the film was awarded Best Comedy in Cannes in 1953 , and ten years later the title role in Berlanga's The Executioner .

In 1958 Isbert was awarded the Premio del Sindicato Nacional de Espectáculo for his life's work . In 1960 his memoirs appeared under the title Ma vida artistica . In 1964 he had to retire from film because of a larynx problem.

José Isbert was married to Elvira Soriano. His daughter María Isbert and grandson Tony Isbert also became actors.
