Josef Weikert (* 1837 in Friedland ; † November 15, 1907 in Weißkirchen ) was a church musician and composer of Bohemian origin.

Life

Josef Weikert studied at the Prague Conservatory from 1866 to 1867 and also took organ lessons at the Prague Organ School with František Zdeněk Skuherský in 1867 . From 1867 to 1873 he was Regens Chori at the Catholic Church in Leitmeritz . After that he worked for a year as a choir master and singing teacher of the Lugoscher Singing and Music Association. In 1874 he became organist and Regens Chori of the Catholic Church of Sanktanna and at the same time choirmaster of the German Men's Choir in Weißkirchen . He also worked as a piano and music teacher and gave numerous concerts with his students, the choral society and sometimes the military band of the Weißkirchen garrison.

To mark his thirty-year service anniversary, Weikert was honored in 1905 with a festive service in the Church of Sanktanna and made an honorary member of the German Men's Choir. Many of his numerous compositions, mainly for church music, were lost when the German population was expelled from Weißkirchen in 1944, only a little more than forty have survived.
