Josep Antoni Alcover i Tomás (* 1954 in Caracas ) is a Spanish zoologist and paleontologist (mammals, birds).

He is at IMEDEA (Institut Mediterrani d'Estudis Avançats - Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies) in Esporles , 15 km from Palma de Mallorca. He is also associated with the Mammalian Department of the American Museum of Natural History .

Alcover is particularly concerned with the fauna of the Balearic and Canary Islands (and other islands in Macaronesia ), including extinct species. He also dealt with the first settlement of the Balearic Islands.

In 2012, together with colleagues, he identified the fossils of a scops owl (Otus mauli), which had been found by Harald Pieper in the early 1990s, probably as a result of the Portuguese settlement on Madeira .
