Joseph Lewis

Joseph Lewis (born June 11, 1889 in Montgomery , Alabama , † 1968 ) was an American free thinker . He was known for his advocacy of atheism .

Life

Lewis came into contact with the writings of Robert G. Ingersoll and Thomas Paine early on . From 1920 he lived in New York, where he was president of the Freethinkers of America from then on. He started his own publishing house, the Freethought Press Association , to publish literature on freethinking. He later expanded his publishing house. The Freethinkers of America series first appeared in 1937 and was later renamed Freethinker and ultimately Age of Reason (after Paines The Age of Reason ). Contributors included William J. Fielding , Corliss Lamont and Franklin Steiner .
