Joseph Sprague

Charles Joseph Sprague (born April 21, 1939 ) is a methodist emeritus bishop in the United States .

Life

After 27 years in the ministry and seven years as the ecumenical officer, Sprague was elected bishop of the United Methodist Church for Chicago and Northern Illinois in 1996 . In 2004 he retired.

When Sprague published his book Affirmations of a dissenter in 2002 , it sparked a theological dispute within the UMC . Among other things, Sprague turns against the virgin birth of Jesus .
