overall view

The Josua-und-Kaleb-Brunnen on the corner of Rainstrasse and Württembergstrasse in Stuttgart-Rotenberg is a work of art by Karl Donndorf .

In a round fountain bowl there is a column with a square floor plan, which is decorated with the three stag poles from the Württemberg coat of arms . As a fountain figure she carries two naked boys who are walking behind one another on a shouldered pole and carrying a large bunch of veal . Below the group, on the capital, you can see plant and animal motifs - such as a lizard and a snail. The fountain is made of yellowish artificial stone and was erected in 1927. It was renovated in 1982 and is in operation from May to September.

motive

The fountain figures allude to a story from the 4th book of Moses , chapters 13 and 14. Moses sent twelve spies from the Paran desert to explore the land. After 40 days of exploration, Joshua and Caleb brought a vine with a bunch of grapes, which the two of them carried on a pole. They told of a land where milk and honey flowed. The other ten spies, however, incited the Israelites against Joshua and Caleb and against Moses and claimed that the land of Canaan was impregnable, whereupon the two tore their clothes and exhorted the people to trust in God. As a punishment, the Israelites had to wander in the desert until all doubters perished. But Kaleb got there.

The grape, initially a symbol of wealth and abundance, also became a symbol of the Savior on the cross in the Middle Ages . Many depictions of the biblical scene described later showed - unlike Donndorf's fountain figures - the front bearer as a representative of Judaism, which precedes Christianity, and the rear bearer as a pagan who is converted and follows Christ. At first, depictions of the scene were mostly to be found in churches and as Bible illustrations, for example in the Heidelberg Poor Bible around 1430. Later profane objects were also decorated with it in wine-growing areas such as Rotenberg and the religious-historical significance of the scene contrasted with the motif of joy and that of common people Load back into the background.
