Joting

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The jotation is the appearance of an iot before vowels , e.g. B. initial in Slavic languages . In Russian, for example, the (Cyrillic) letters Е / е and Ё / ё at the beginning of a word or after a vowel are pronounced with jot. The simple (Cyrillic) Е becomes je , the one with two dots (Ё) is jo , Ю / ю is ju , and Яя ja . The following names serve as examples: Елена = Jelena (Helena); Йонас = Jonas; Юпитер = Jupiter; Янина = Janina. For example, the Russian word её (pronunciation: jejo ) means “her” ( possessive pronoun ).
