The Journal of Military History (J Mil Hist) is a leading academic journal for US and global military history , including maritime and air, founded in 1937. It appears quarterly with articles, book reviews, topic-related articles from other journals, research reports and is peer- reviewed -Review . The journal was named the Journal of the American Military Institute in 1939 and was renamed Military Affairs: The Journal of Military History, Including Theory and Technology in 1941 , before being given its current name in 1989.

Individual authors (Gregory Daddis, Jochen S. Arndt, Kevin Weddle, Kerry Irish, Brian F. Neumann, Timothy S. Wolters, Andrew J. Birtle and Lorraine White) were honored for their articles.

The journal is published for the Society for Military History by the George C. Marshall Foundation and the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in Lexington. The current editor is Colonel Bruce Vandervort , Professor of History at VMI. The Editorial Advisory Board includes historians Timothy K. Nenninger, Gary P. Cox, Marc Milner, Susannah J. Ural, John W. Hall, Frank J. Wetta, Brian Holden Reid , Frederick C. Schneid, and Mark E. Grotelueschen.

The journal is listed in the Arts and Humanities Citation Index .
