advancement

The funds allocated directly by the OeNB from the original anniversary fund are distributed for high-quality scientific work in the field of economics as well as clinical disease- and patient-oriented research projects in the field of medical sciences. Projects from the social sciences and humanities can also be funded.

In 1982 additional funds were made available for “business-oriented research funding”. These are made available by the two research funding funds FFF (Research Funding Fund for Business) and FWF ( Fund for the Promotion of Scientific Research ), the CDG (Christian Doppler Research Association) and institutes of the ÖAW ( Austrian Academy of Sciences ). Basic funding from three economic research institutes ( Institute for Advanced Studies , Austrian Institute for Economic Research and Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies ) was made available from 1982 onwards.

According to the Federal Law, Federal Law Gazette I No. 133/2003, the National Foundation for Research, Technology and Development (RTD National Foundation) was finally created. On the basis of this law, by resolution of an extraordinary general meeting of the OeNB on December 11, 2003, reserves of EUR 1.5 billion were released and retrospectively dedicated to the anniversary fund for the promotion of research and teaching tasks in science as of January 1, 2003.

The funding of the OeNB in the field of business-oriented research, which had existed since 1982, expired with the establishment of the National FTE Foundation.

The anniversary fund is currently promoting projects that expand the state of research on issues relevant to central banks, with particular attention to the priorities communicated. Since the anniversary fund was founded, more than 10,000 research projects have been funded with a total of 820 million euros. The anniversary fund has thus established itself as an indispensable component in securing the future of Austrian science and research, which is also shown by the fact that significantly more applications are eligible for funding than can be covered with the available funding.
