Carlo Caracciolo
Carlo Caracciolo (born October 23, 1925 in Florence , † December 15, 2008 in Trastevere , Rome ) was an Italian media entrepreneur.
Life
Carlo Caracciolo was the son of the Neapolitan prince Filippo Caracciolo di Castagneto, Duke of Melito, and the American Margaret Clarke. His sister Marella was married to Giovanni Agnelli . He himself followed his father as the 9th Prince of Castagneto and 4th Duke of Melito; he was followed by his younger brother, the director Nicola Caracciolo .
During the Second World War he was active in the Italian resistance . After the war, he studied law at La Sapienza University in Rome and at Harvard Law School in Boston . In 1951 he founded the Milan-based Etas Kompass publishing house, which mainly published technical magazines and industry yearbooks. In 1955 he acquired the majority of shares in the Italian weekly magazine L'Espresso . In 1976 he founded the daily La Repubblica with Eugenio Scalfari . In 2007 Caracciolo bought a third of the French daily Liberation .
He was considered the most influential media entrepreneur in Italy and an opponent of Silvio Berlusconi .
